Whatever will we do when Breaking Bad comes to an end later this year? Sure we will still have Mad Men to last us another year, but despite my appreciation for the well crafted story lines over at Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce, there is just something so interesting about Walter White’s downward spiral, something so morally ambiguous, that I can’t help but wonder what will fill the void when it is off the air for good.
Well, it appears AMC’s answer to this question is Low Winter Sun, a new police drama series in the works. After seeing the trailer, I’m remaining cautiously optimistic about how Low Winter Sun will fare. It’s obvious that AMC is continuing their winning formula of depicting morally gray anti-heroes. I mean, the very first line of the trailer literally talks about the lack of black and whiteness when it comes to morality. Still it’s hard to deny that there is a lack of elbow room for yet another television cop drama. Will Low Winter Sun be new and fresh enough to capture our imagination the way Vince Gilligan did with Breaking Bad or the way Matthew Weiner did with Mad Men? Is this AMC sticking too close to their success rather than branching out into uncharted territory? Who knows. Trailers are difficult things to read.
It’s clear that Mark Strong’s character is definitely no Walter White, whether for better or worse is anyone’s call. I’ve never seen him in a performance I didn’t like so I’ll be excited to see if he can carry a show. Regardless of how Low Winter Sun turns out, it’s nice to see that AMC is not resting on their laurels.
