Marvel NOW! has ushered in a massive shakeup for the comic giant’s universe. Writers have shifted books, characters have changed allegiances, and, as these cyclical processes go, things feel more than a little reinvigorated. Perhaps in no corner of the Marvel Universe is this truer than the X-Men franchise. Longtime fans have seen some pretty good stories over the years, but these often merely punctuate extended periods of mediocrity. Recent years have seen an upswing in quality start to seep into the X-Men comics, with series like X-Factor, Uncanny X-Force, and Wolverine and the X-Men being consistent performers. But now, in the wake of Avengers vs. X-Men and with the debut of several new titles, this level of quality is starting to feel ubiquitous throughout the franchise. Whether you’re a new fan or a lapsed reader who got burnt out on the cumbersome excesses the X-Men canon has borne, there’s never been a better time to dive into the X-Men comics. Here are three reasons why.
Brian L. Martin is an educator, writer, and amateur curmudgeon. An avid fan of novels, movies, and beer, he would much rather spend his time reading comics, a lifelong love since receiving a copy of The Amazing Spider-Man # 242 from Spider-Man himself in 1983. His favorite books include The Grapes of Wrath, Siddhartha, and The Complete Calvin and Hobbes, which is heavy enough to be considered the only real defense weapon he has in his home. He currently lives with his wife in Uppsala, Sweden.
