This August, superstar writer Jonathan Hickman is joined by fan-favorite artists Leinil Yu and Mike Deodato to show fans what an “Avengers Universe” looks like in Avengers #18 and New Avengers #9! Tying into the blockbuster event of the summer, Infinity, these issues show fans what new threats lie beyond the edges of the Marvel Universe!
A powerful and destructive race is on a collision course with Earth and the only thing in their path is the Avengers! But even Earth’s Mightiest Heroes realize the one hope of defeating this dire threat is to unite every great hero across the cosmos…because only with a united “Avengers Universe” is there any chance of survival! But in order to do so, Captain America and the Avengers must join the Council of Worlds as they declare war on their cosmic invaders. And when the key to their success lies within the rebirth of the Skrull Empire, there’s no telling what may happen next!
With the Avengers fending off an intergalactic threat on the edges of the Marvel Universe, Earth becomes the most vulnerable planet in the system! Enter Thanos, the galaxy’s most ruthless threat and an unparalleled force of brutality who brings order to the chaos of life through murder. Earth’s last hope may lie in the hands of a man who can level cities with a single whisper – Black Bolt, king of the Inhumans. But is the combined might of the clandestine group of Avengers enough to push back Thanos and his deadly group of lieutenants – the Cull Obsidian?
“As with Avengers, Jonathan’s issues of New Avengers are a critical part of the overall Infinity story. There are elements that were set into place in the earliest issues of the series that he and Deo will be paying off on here,” explains Executive Editor Tom Brevoort.
“Moreso than any other tie-ins, Jonathan’s issues of Avengers and New Avengers are an integral core part of the Infinity story—absolutely essential to the reading experience, so these issues that Leinil is drawing are key to everything. You could maybe enjoy Infinity without them, but you’re really not going to want to.”
Both of these titles have played such a vital role in the Marvel NOW! movement. They each have ventured outside of the barriers imposed by Earth and our galaxy by exploring entirely new realms and possibilities. The Avengers have fought celestial beings and aliens while the New Avengers, aka the Illuminati, have battled against a powerful foe as well as the ever-present danger of worlds literally colliding into one another. The stakes have certainly been raised and Hickman, Yu, and Deodato all have their work cut out for them with the epic, upcoming Infinity.
If you haven’t been keeping up with Avengers and New Avengers since Brian Michael Bendis departed for the X-Men titles, then you definitely want to catch up before August rolls around. The events in both books are continually heating up, and to be honest, New Avengers has become one of my favorite Marvel NOW! titles. The Illuminati is comprised of such an A-List group of heroes that always guarantees an exciting, although often morally compromising, story. With Thanos, the Skrull Empire, and an intergalactic struggle in the recipe, Infinity is going to be an epic you won’t want to miss.
Most people call me JJ. I’m 23 and currently working as a freelance web-designer as I finish up my schooling. I’m a huge comic book fan and I have an immense appreciation for the medium. I can’t believe that one of my multiple jobs involves reading and writing about comic books.
