Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: The First Look

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has officially been picked up by ABC and is slated to premiere this fall! We got our ‘first look’ last night during the season finale of ABC’s Once Upon A Time, although the cast photo was released a few days earlier. Joss, his brother Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen are credited as executive producers, with writers Jeph Loeb (Heroes) and Jeffrey Bell (Angel) charged with co-creating the pilot.

ABC, which is owned by Disney (who also owns Marvel) looks to be a great fit for Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. After all, Joss’s gigantic success with The Avengers most likely indicates that Disney trusts him, which is something that can’t be said for that other entity responsible for murdering Firefly and Dollhouse.

So what was included in the tragically short first look?  It appears to be Joss’s two favorite things, explosions and emotional resonance.  We saw a few seconds of a fight scene, a fire, and Agent Coulson stepping out of a beautiful red sports car, giving this order to the attendant: “Don’t touch Lola.”  The second person we got to see the most of was Skye, played by Chloe Bennet, who I think may be the next Buffy or Echo.

The color palette seems to be the same as The Avengers S.H.I.E.L.D. ship, mostly grays, purples and dark blues.  This seems to indicate the show will be more in line with the science fiction of Dollhouse than any of Joss’s other shows.  It’s an interesting choice, since Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. combines both science fiction and fantasy and could use either to influence the color scheme.  Coulson’s little beaut of a car is, however, a classic red.

The clip hinges on Coulson’s last line of dialogue: “It’s not just spy versus spy anymore; the whole world’s in on the action.”  What this means, specifically for the team, remains to be seen.  I’m curious to see what else ABC will do to promote the show.  I can’t wait for a another peek at what is sure to be the most highly anticipated premiere this fall!
