After announcing to his podcast audience over the weekend that Sony had offered him the opportunity to return as show runner to Community, Dan Harmon has finally announced via his Twitter account that he will, in fact, be returning to the show for its newly announced fifth season, a development that will no doubt delight fans of the show who were somewhat disappointed by the critical and commercial decline of the show in his absence. It also marks a rare occasion in the television industry when a fired show runner has been asked to return.

I’m glad Dan Harmon is back. I didn’t hate season 4, but I certainly noticed Harmon’s absence. His return does, however, raise certain questions. For example, will the host of people (Dino Stamatopoulos and the Russo brothers to name a few) who exited the show with Harmon be returning as well. There has obviously been some influence by the network to make the show a “brighter” experience. Will Harmon be expected to fall under this aesthetic as well?
Regardless of how things turn out, it looks like, for now, things are definitely looking up for Community fans as a show that has been living under the axe for quite some time gets some more positive news after a somewhat unexpected renewal.
