DC’s Vertigo imprint issued a press release on July 1 announcing details of the return of The Sandman. Neil Gaiman returns to his original storyline in The Sandman: Overture #1 to explore the world of Dream/Morpheus before his imprisonment.
“This is the one story that we never got to tell,” Gaiman commented in a New York Timesarticle. “In Sandman #1 Morpheus is captured somehow. Later on in the series, you learn he was returning from somewhere far, far away—but we never got to the story of what he was doing and what had happened.”
Since the beginning of the Sandman series, Gaiman has grown in popularity for his novels, children’s books, and work in film and television. His most recent release is fantasy novel The Ocean at the End of the Lane, released through William Morrow last month.
The series will be illustrated by J. H. Williams III (Batwoman, Promethea), whose style and page composition is an ideal match to the dark and fantastical atmosphere of Gaiman’s words. Gaiman praises Williams work:
“They are the most beautiful pages I have ever seen in periodical comics…I ask him to do the impossible, and he gives me back more than I asked for.”
The Sandman: Overture #1 will be released on October 30, 2013 as an over-sized print edition and digital issue. Covers will be designed by both Williams and original series cover artist Dave McKean.
Issues will be released bi-monthly, alternating with Special Editions which feature original scripts by Gaiman, conceptual art by Williams, and interviews with members of the creative team.
