Famed French actress, Catherine Deneuve, has been working within the film industry for years now. Ever since her breakthrough role in The Umbrellas of Cherbourg in 1964, she became a memorable and strong presence in European cinema. She has worked with some of the greatest filmmakers of our time, including Roman Polanski, Lars von Trier, and Luis Bunuel.
One of her best performances can be seen in Roman Polanski’s 1965 film, Repulsion, in which she plays a young, virginal woman who becomes mentally unhinged. It is a tour de force – unrelenting and brave, and one of the greatest psychological horror films ever made. Deneuve carries the entire film from start to finish.
Deneuve has also appeared in a few American productions, including the vampire film, The Hunger, starring Susan Sarandon – which featured a then-controversial lesbian sex scene involving the two women. She has also appeared on television in a guest role on Ryan Murphy’s phenomenally successful night-time soap, Nip/Tuck.
On December 7th, Catherine Deneuve will receive a Lifetime Achievement Award at the European Film Awards, which will take place in Berlin. She has earned several other awards throughout her long and successful career, including to French Cesar awards, a Silver Bear in Berlin, as well as an Oscar nomination.
