Five Things We Need to See in CATCHING FIRE

Catching Fire comes out this week, and like many book fans I’m very excited about the sequel. The Hunger Games did what was almost impossible: launching a commercially and critically successful film franchise based on a young adult novel. So far, the franchise draws much of its strength from how faithfully it sticks to the book and its strong cast—particularly Jennifer Lawrence, who makes the idea of anyone else embodying the role of Katniss unthinkable. So far, the films are headed in the right direction.

However, that’s not to say there isn’t room for error—or improvement. As a fan of both books and film I have every reason to be hopeful. The shaky cam that became distracting in the first film looks like it has settled into a much more mature, steady style of filmmaking. The trailers—though they’ve revealed far too many of the surprises that made the book such a delight to read—all make Catching Fire seem like it has grown in scale while delving even more deeply into the characters and their emotional journeys. Even the casting has continued to impress. But, if it really wants to please book fans, here are five things Catching Fire must include. Warning—spoilers ahead!

A southern native, I graduated from the University of South Carolina in 2013 with a bachelor's degree in Media Arts. Over the past several years I've had the opportunity to write and shoot a number of short films. My biggest passions are writing and talking about movies with anyone who will sit still long enough to listen - something my family and friends can attest to! Some of my favorite filmmakers include Christopher Nolan, Stanley Kubrick, and Wes Anderson. Now located in Nashville, you can usually find me in my off hours hiking, baking, or watching more movies.
